Preservation and Use of Historical Buildings and Villages

In my study, fieldwork and literature documentation estimate the value of historical buildings. Visualization of the feature of the target building or rows of houses mainly using drawings and maps clarifies regional characteristics. Aiming at clarifying the historical and cultural formation, the investigation is conducted with the framework of a wide area such as a city or a farming village, not only a solo building. This study aims at the contribution to the city plan utilizing historic buildings, landscape administration, and qualitative progress of life space. Moreover, I want to promote use of historical buildings, and connect that to solution of the problem of shortage of engineers and materials, and promotion of technical development.

Sustainable Building Production Using the Wood and Thatch of the Satoyama (woods and grasslands located near human habitats and tended by human beings)

I am doing the basic research for reappraising the traditional building production system and applying it to the present-day new buildings. The resources of natural woodland in the area used to be utilized for many of private houses in Japan, with wooden frame and roof truss, and thatched roof, which are reproducible building materials without fossil fuel. Many of traditional life spaces in Japan had a sustainable building production system of maintaining the resources of natural woodlands with use of a required quantity only, which should be viewed as a model in the view of reuse, with long life of buildings and the minimization of scrap wood by frequent repair and reuse. I want to apply a part of the system and method of structure to the present-day buildings, and contribute to the realization of sustainable construction production, and preservation of natural woodlands.
